Paigow Game Rules

HISTORY
Paigow poker is a recent addition to the casinos, and is one of many games that have an Asian origin. A combination of the Chinese game of Paigow (meaning makes nine) and the American game of poker, this game of skill offers players a reasonable chance to win.

In this version of poker, players are not wagering against each other but against the bank, and unlike the original Asian version, which is played with dominoes, Paigow poker is played with a deck of cards. The object of the game is for the player to hold two hands of cards that rank higher than the banker's two hands.

GAME PLAY
A pack of 52 cards plus one joker is used. The joker is a wild card that can be used as an Ace, or to complete straight, flush or a straight flush.

After the player has made his first bet, the "SECOND HAND" button will highlight offering the opportunity for playing a second hand at the same time. Rules for playing the second hand are the same. When the player receives his cards, they have to be set into two hands of five and two cards. The two-card hand is known as the low hand is placed above the five-card hand known as the high hand. Each five-card hand is ranked according to the Paigow poker hierarchy, which varies only slightly from the standard poker hierarchy. The only real difference is that Five Aces, which are accomplished by adding four Aces to a joker, beats out a Royal Flush and is the highest hand in the game.

Rank Hand Description

Five Aces (Four Aces and a joker)
Royal Flush (A, K, Q, J, 10 all of same suit)
Straight Flush (Five cards of the same suit in sequence)
4 of a Kind (Four cards of the same value)
Full House (3 cards of the same value and a Pair)
Flush (Five cards of the same suit)
Straight (Five consecutive cards)
3 of a Kind (Three cards of the same value)
2 Pair (Two cards of one value, plus two of another value)
1 Pair (Two cards of the same value)

The hierarchy of two-card hands is much simpler in that the hand is either a pair or it is not. The highest two-card hand is a pair of Aces, and the rank of subsequent pairs falls in order from kings down to twos. The same ranking order applies to single cards.

It is the players' responsibility to ensure that their five-card hand has a higher ranking than their two-card hand. If the two-card hand turns out to be higher, the player will be notified and allowed to change the hand. When the player is ready, he clicks on the "DONE" button and the dealer’s cards will be exposed. The dealer also forms the seven cards into a five-card hand and a two-card hand in the same way as a player. The result between the dealer and the player is determined by comparing the player's 5-card hand with the dealer's five-card hand and the player's 2-card hand with the dealer’s 2-card hand.

Always remember when playing Paigow:

If the player wins both hands, the dealer pays out the amount bet by the player less a 5% commission. The commission is collected from the payoff.

If the dealer wins one hand and the player wins the other, no money changes hands. This is called a "Push".

If the dealer wins both hands the dealer collects the player's bets.

If either hand is tied. The dealer wins that particular hand. If the dealer wins or ties the other hand, it is a win for the dealer. If one hand is tied and the player wins the other hand, it is a "Push". •
